What a building survey includes

Most building and commercial work at Bee Locksmith starts with a survey. It costs the building far less to find the real problem before the work order is written. Here is what we look at and what you get.

What we look at

  • Doors: how each opening closes and latches, hinges, pivots, closers, thresholds and the condition of the door and frame.
  • Locks and keys: cylinder types, keyways, whether there is a master key system and who holds keys.
  • Electrified hardware: strikes, maglocks, power supplies, request-to-exit devices and how they tie in to the intercom or readers.
  • Intercom and access control: the entry panel, riser wiring, apartment or tenant count and any cloud accounts.
  • Problem openings: the doors staff or tenants complain about most.

What you get

  • A written estimate covering every trade on one document: door, lock and low voltage
  • Options where there is a real choice, such as repair vs. replace
  • What we stock, what we order and what we import, with lead times
  • Your work-order number on the estimate if you use one
  • A COI naming the building and managing agent, on request

How to prepare

  1. List the openings that cause the most trouble.
  2. Have someone on site with access to mechanical rooms, roof and basement.
  3. Tell us about any existing service contracts on the intercom or access system.
  4. Send any building work rules: hours, elevator use, insurance requirements.

After the survey

Approved work moves to parts and prep, then to the site, and the office hears when it is done. See buildings, boards and supers, property management accounts or request a survey.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a charge for a survey?

Ask when you call 212-837-4444; it depends on the size and type of the job. Commercial work runs on a written estimate and invoice terms, with no card required to start.

How long does a survey take?

It depends on the building. A single storefront is quick; a full building with an intercom and many openings takes longer. We tell you when we schedule.

Will one estimate cover the door, the lock and the intercom?

Yes. Our door division, locksmiths and low voltage technicians work for the same company, so the estimate covers every trade.

Can you survey several locations at once?

Yes. See multi-location businesses.
